Which Industries Need to Take Cybersecurity More Seriously?

Take Cybersecurity Seriously

Cyber threats have been around as long as the benefits of interconnectedness that the internet has brought. Some industries, like the tech, telecommunications, and energy sectors, have long since realized the need to take cybersecurity seriously. Even banking, which is slow to adapt to most tech trends, generally has some of the most formidable cyber defenses.

What about the stragglers? Which industries are at a high risk of cyberattacks yet may not be prepared? Read on to learn more about them, why they’re tempting targets, and what dangers they face.

Healthcare

There’s a noticeable divide in healthcare when it comes to cybersecurity. Large hospitals, insurance providers, and pharmaceutical companies are usually aware of the risks and take appropriate precautions. Meanwhile, private practices are more likely to lack the IT personnel and awareness needed to safeguard data correctly.

This is a serious concern, as they collect a large amount of highly sensitive patient data, including both personally identifiable information (PII) and medical histories. Cybercriminals prize such data, so ransomware attacks and breaches that specifically target smaller medical practices aren’t uncommon.

Manufacturing and Construction

Since their dependence on digital technologies isn’t as pronounced, manufacturing and construction companies may disregard the need for robust cybersecurity without realizing how vulnerable they are. The introduction of IoT in manufacturing can become a risk without proper access controls. Similarly, any third-party companies that cooperate with may improperly store their data.

Real Estate

Acquiring a home is a data-intensive process, and real estate agencies may not realize the scope of their related responsibilities. Apart from PII, they collect legal data, financial records, and information on various properties. That last one is particularly interesting for conventional criminals since it may include building and security system layouts. Ensuring proper access controls to such information is imperative.

Education

Yet another sector that collects lots of sensitive information by necessity, yet may lack the IT expertise and infrastructure to secure it properly. Students are at risk since most lack fundamental cybersecurity knowledge, and many educators aren’t much better off.

The consequences of cybersecurity negligence in education can be severe since breaches may expose sensitive information related to minors. Since such information typically includes their academic email addresses, cybercriminals can further complicate things by targeting students and faculty with phishing attacks.

NGOs and Nonprofits

The organizations that fall under this umbrella have ample data to protect, yet typically lack the budget and expertise to do so effectively. Details on donors and beneficiaries, legal documents, and proprietary research are all at risk without a cybersecurity strategy in place.

Indirect threats affect education, healthcare, and small to medium-sized businesses. However, employees and volunteers who contribute to NGO and non-profit operations are the most likely to use their own devices or access their organization’s digital resources via unsafe means like public Wi-Fi. This is easy to mitigate if they download a VPN and use it whenever connecting through those networks. Not all nonprofits and NGOs enforce this practice, though.

Which Threats Do These Industries Face?

As cyber threats become more sophisticated, organizations are increasingly turning to automation and artificial intelligence to strengthen their defenses. Many security teams now rely on the best AI agents to monitor networks, detect unusual behavior, and respond to threats faster than manual processes allow. Businesses with limited technical resources can also benefit from a Best AI Agent Builder, which makes it easier to create customized AI-powered workflows for tasks such as threat monitoring, employee security training, and incident response without requiring extensive development expertise.

  • Weak access controls – One of the main means by which data breaches happen. A single compromised account may extract valuable data, gain admin privileges, or infect the system with malware. Strong access controls involve a role-based approach and regular credential auditing.
  • Phishing attacks – Target compromised email addresses with messages that urge recipients to open attachments or click on harmful links. This can lead to credential theft or infection. Not as impactful if users are trained to recognize and avoid such messages.
  • Data breaches – Happen when cybercriminals or ill-meaning insiders gain unauthorized access to sensitive information. The best VPNs help protect your data in transit and reduce this risk.
  • Ransomware – A crippling type of malware that can make critical files or the whole system inaccessible unless the creator’s demands are met. Much less effective if regular off-site backups are maintained.

Conclusion

Several threads link all the industries we mentioned. They were all either digitized relatively recently or digital workflows aren’t at their core. They also collect and process valuable data, yet feel complacent in safeguarding it. There’s no room for complacency in the modern digital landscape; cybersecurity needs to be a core consideration, not a one-off or afterthought, regardless of industry.
