How To Target Facebook Posts By Language And Location

Large Facebook pages will have followers from all around the world. It’s important to cater to international audiences in some way, such as choosing to post in a certain language. Followers will not be interested in following your page if they constantly see messages in languages they don’t understand, or for events that are happening in different countries. Instead, learn how to target posts by language and location, so that you can cater to local markets appropriately without detracting from your global audience.

Setting up Post Targeting

To begin targeting your posts to specific audiences, you must first go to your Facebook Page settings. Under ‘General’, find ‘Post Targeting and Privacy’ and make sure the option is checked.

When you next go to make a post to your wall, two more icons will appear in the bottom left corner of the new post box. A crosshair looking icon allows you to add targeting to your post.

Adding targeting to posts

To add targeting to a Facebook post, click the crosshair icon when creating a new post and select the ‘Add Targeting’ option that appears. This will bring up a dropdown containing many different options that you can choose for your targeting. You can choose to target your post by:

  • Gender
  • Relationship status
  • Educational Status
  • Interested in
  • Age
  • Location
  • Language

Some restrictions are looser than others. For example, if you choose to target a post by gender, it won’t stop your post from completely not appearing to the other gender. It will only reduce the chances. However, both the Language and Location options are strict and won’t show to users of other languages or locations.

Why target posts by language and location?

Targeting posts bring many benefits. You increase user engagement by appealing to locality – speak their language, but also talk like they do. Use Post Targeting to help with regional engagement, from using local words and terms to mentioning local events in your posts, all served from a single Facebook page.
