Owning a Discord server gives you a place to organise a community, but sometimes that space is no longer needed. Only the server owner can delete it, and deletion is permanent. Before removing a Discord server, decide whether you want to close the whole community or simply stop managing it yourself.
This 2026 guide covers desktop and mobile use, including Iphone and Android. The menu layout may vary by app version. Follow the labels and read the final confirmation carefully, especially if you manage several servers with similar names or icons.
Before deleting the server
Tell the people who still use the community what is happening and when. A quiet server can contain useful project notes, event details or files that members still need. Give them a reasonable chance to save material they are entitled to keep. Do not assume that an inactive conversation means nobody relies on the information.
Make a short checklist of your own important documents, channel descriptions and community rules. Keep any necessary copies in an appropriate location, respecting other members’ privacy. A list of channel names may help you plan a future community, but it should not be confused with a restorable copy of the old server.
If the problem is unwanted visitors, consider whether moderation and access settings would address it. If you are tired of running the community, discuss a handover with a suitable member. Closing a community and stepping away from its management are different decisions. Choose the outcome first, then use the relevant controls.
How to delete a server on desktop
- Open Discord in the desktop app or use the browser version, then select the correct server.
- Open the server name menu and choose Server Settings.
- Scroll to Delete Server and select it.
- Follow the confirmation prompt. Discord may ask for the server name or, when enabled on your account, a two-factor authentication code.
- Confirm only after checking that this is the server you intend to remove.

Do not copy a name from an old note without comparing it with the server currently open. If you have a test server and a live community with similar branding, open their channel lists before beginning. Taking a moment here is easier than discovering after confirmation that you selected the wrong community.
Delete a server from the mobile app
On mobile, open the server menu using the three dots beside its name, then choose Settings. Open the server overview. In Discord’s documented mobile flow, this is where you scroll down to Delete Server. Complete the confirmation shown, including an authentication code if requested.

If you are reading these instructions on the same phone, move between the guide and Discord slowly enough to check each screen. Avoid repeatedly tapping where a button appeared in a screenshot. A menu may close or move when the keyboard opens, and a second tap can select something different.
Why is Delete Server missing?
First check that you are using the account that owns the server. Administrator permissions alone do not make somebody the owner. Discord also notes that a server’s two-factor requirements can affect whether its owner sees the deletion option. Consult the account and server security settings if that applies.
When asking for help, describe the screen you can see and whether you are on desktop, browser or mobile. Do not share an authentication code, recovery code or password in a support conversation with another member. A screenshot of a menu can be useful, but remove private messages and personal details before sharing it.
What happens afterwards?
Discord states that a deleted server cannot be restored, including its messages and member list. Creating another server with the same name does not recover the original. Treat the final confirmation as the point at which the old community becomes unavailable.
After closure, update any places where you advertised the community, such as your own website, event instructions or profile text. If members were directed to another space, make sure those instructions are clear. Otherwise, people may continue looking for a server that no longer exists.

Before starting again after an interruption, check the current state. You may still be in a confirmation window, or the action may already have completed. Read what is on screen instead of repeating the entire sequence automatically. This is particularly important for an action that cannot be undone.
