You cannot change a finalized Reddit username, including its capitalization. You can edit the display name on your profile, or create a separate account with a different username. These options have different consequences, so first decide whether you want a new profile label or a new identity attached to future posts and comments.
Reddit is a social news and discussion platform. Earlier versions of this article cited nearly 330 million monthly active users and a Statista ranking from 2020. Those references are historical context, not current audience figures, and they do not affect the rules for changing your name.
Members submit text posts, links and images, and other members can vote or reply. Your account name therefore matters when people recognise your contributions. If the name no longer suits you, changing the profile’s display label may solve the presentation problem without starting again.
Display name and username: what is the difference?
A username on Reddit is the account identifier usually shown with u/. A display name is an editable label on your profile. Changing that label does not rename the account or replace the username associated with existing posts and comments.
For example, an account with the username u/ExampleReader could use “Alex” as its display name. Editing “Alex” to “Alex — design projects” changes how the profile presents itself, but u/ExampleReader remains the account’s username. Check both fields before assuming an edit has failed.
People may want a different name because an old joke has become embarrassing, their interests have changed, or they now use a different brand name. A display-name update is useful for those presentation changes, provided you are comfortable keeping the original username visible elsewhere.
Can you change your Reddit username?
The official Reddit help guidance states that a finalized username cannot be changed. It also says that deleting the account will not release that username for reuse. Do not delete an account as an experiment to make the name available again.
Older tutorials sometimes describe a limited selection window for accounts created through another sign-in service. Do not rely on that as a way to rename an established account. The current Help Centre rule concerns finalized usernames; a profile display-name field is not a hidden username-change option.
How to change your display name
On the web, open your account’s Settings and go to the Profile section. In the mobile app, open your profile and select Edit. Reddit’s profile-settings guidance identifies the display name as one of the details you can customise, alongside your bio and images.
- Confirm that you are using the account whose profile you want to edit.
- Find the display-name field and enter the label you want visitors to see.
- Save or confirm the change if the interface asks you to.
- Reopen the profile to check the result, then compare it with the separate username.
If the old label remains, refresh the page or reopen the app before editing again. Avoid making several rapid changes while checking different signed-in accounts; that makes it harder to tell which profile you actually updated.
When creating a new account makes sense
A new account is the practical choice if you need a different username on future contributions. Treat it as a separate account rather than a rename. Make a short list of the communities you want to join again and the saved discussions you want to find later, so the move is deliberate.
Do not assume that account history, karma, saved items or relationships will automatically move with you. Before leaving the old account, review anything you still need access to. You can keep the existing account while you decide; an immediate deletion is unnecessary just because the name feels dated.
If you want existing readers to recognise the new account, consider a brief profile explanation. If your aim is greater privacy, announcing the connection would work against that aim. Decide which outcome matters before publicly linking the two identities.
Choose the new username carefully
Read the proposed name slowly before confirming it, including digits and punctuation. Check whether it reveals details you would rather keep separate from public discussions, such as your full name, workplace or birth year. A name that fits one hobby today may feel restrictive later.
For a professional profile, think about whether the name will remain appropriate if your role changes. For a personal profile, avoid including information merely because another site uses it. Consistency can make you easier to find, but that may not be your goal on every platform.
Common misunderstandings
Changing a display name does not erase earlier contributions or detach them from the account. Creating another account is also not permission to evade a community ban or manipulate votes. Keep the reason for the new account separate from Reddit’s rules governing how accounts may be used.
If you have forgotten which account you used, solve the access problem before creating another one. Check your saved sign-in details and recovery email, then use Reddit’s official recovery process. A familiar display name alone may not identify the correct account, especially when you maintain several profiles.
